SUMMARY
According to Smith, D.
(2010), author of “Introduction to Journalism. Student Activities Book.” states
that there are several ways that news is gathered by reporters and editors.
These include Eyewitness accounts, Event Calendars/Futures books, Press
releases, stringers/freelance contributors, beat systems, wire services,
interviews, and background research. News-gathering techniques involve
interviewing skills and writing the story from the information gathered from
interviews and other sources. The first technique is the events calendar, which
can be a great resource for student journalists. Background research involves asking
questions of people who know something about the topic or the person you are
about to interview. Investigative reporting involves choosing an administrator,
counselor, or teacher/lecturer whom you do not presently have for a class and
finding out the following information without ever asking them a single
question. The most important details in this text are the steps involved in
writing a mini-biography about a teacher. This mini-biography will be presented
to the teacher to check that the facts are correct. Finally, the interview will
be conducted to get the "meatiest" information. To prepare
for the interview, it is important to make an appointment in advance, learn as
much about the topic or person as possible, know what you want to accomplish in
the interview, and make a list of 15-20 good solid questions. Finally, the
interview story should be written, beginning with an appropriate lead,
alternate quotes, and transitions, and ending on a quote. Pay special attention
to how you handle the quotes and attribution.
REFLECTION
I have upgraded my understanding of what processes are in news gathering and interviewing. I now think that news gathering is an important process that must be known because it can help reporters and editors in making news. Newsgathering and interviewing focus on news-gathering techniques with a special emphasis on interviewing skills and writing the story from the information gathered from interviews and other sources. For me, the most useful learning in this news gathering and interviewing is to make us understand that gathering news has several techniques that can be used to get information. Starting from the event calendar stage where we can contain important events that will be news material to the stage of conducting the interview. I have improved my understanding of the types of interviews like fact and group interviews, the types of questions to ask using 5w+1h, and about types of quotes and transitions such as direct and indirect quotations. This knowledge is helpful for me to be able to collect and write news which will be useful in improving my writing skills. Later, I thought that this knowledge can help me to be able to start writing good news sequentially according to the stages described.
LEARNING STRATEGIES
Learning
strategies are several series of student activities for the learning process in
achieving the goals of learning activities. Each person has a different
strategy in the learning process that is done. Every time I learn something
new, I have different ways to complete a duty done. First, I will make a list
that contains which tasks or lessons that I will do. I used to write it in a
small post it and then stick it on the study table to make it easy to see.
Second, I will do it in the most comfortable place in my opinion the
comfortable room is in my bedroom more precisely on the study table. Third, I
am very happy to do the learning process accompanied by a quiet music. I have
one playlist that I always play if I am doing the learning process where I will
feel more excited in doing it. Finally, after learning has been comfortable and
enjoyable then I will try to start understanding the task I am working on, such
as summarizing what I have to do in an easy understand language. I think it can
all help me in doing the learning process to meet the goals of the learning
activities that I do.
