SUMMARY
According to Smith, D.
(2010), author of “Introduction to Journalism. Student Activities Book.” states
that Before composing questions to ask during an interview, it is often
necessary to do some background research, either on the topic to be discussed
or on the person, you are about to interview. This may involve reading previously
published articles on the topic or concerning the interviewee, looking up biographies
of the interviewee, or searching for information on the Internet. Several steps
must be taken in investigative reporting to be able to collect information and
check your sources for accuracy. Choose an administrator, counselor, or teacher
whom you do not presently have for a class and find out the following
information without ever asking him or her a single question. Write a mini- biography
about the lecturer/teacher. The four most commonly used methods in news gathering
used by Navy journalists are observation, telephone conversations, research,
and interviews. Observation consists of actually seeing an event take place and
then reporting what you have seen in the form of a news story. Telephone
conversations may range from full-scale interviews to brief queries to verify
or amplify information. Research is nothing more than digging out information
from files and reference works. Research is used to verify or amplify facts in
news stories and to give depth to feature stories and magazine articles.
REFLECTION
Having
learned this knowledge about background research, I now realize, before we can interview the interviewee, we must do
some research related to the topic of the interview or related to the source to be interviewed. Because I have not yet
known about this knowledge, I will
now need to do anything that is done in doing background research. From the
selection of sources to be
interviewed, questions that must be known in conducting background research to writing a mini-biography
about the source or the interviewee. For me, the most important aspects were I came to know there are 4 most commonly
used methods in news gathering,
namely observation, telephone conversations, research, and interviews. All methods must be done so that news
gathering can produce accurate information. This knowledge will be useful to me in the workplace because this
writing skill in the news will be related
to writing my final project later. Equally, this is probably related to where
everything I write must be following
the facts based on the background research that I do and can be accounted for later. I have developed
my understanding of background research and other methods of news gathering.
LEARNING STRATEGIES
Learning
strategies are several series of student activities for the learning process in
achieving the goals of learning activities. Each person has a different
strategy in the learning process that is done. Every time I learn something
new, I have different ways to complete a duty done. First, I will make a list
that contains which tasks or lessons that I will do. I used to write it in a
small post it and then stick it on the study table to make it easy to see.
Second, I will do it in the most comfortable place in my opinion the
comfortable room is in my bedroom more precisely on the study table. Third, I
am very happy to do the learning process accompanied by a quiet music. I have
one playlist that I always play if I am doing the learning process where I will
feel more excited in doing it. Finally, after learning has been comfortable and
enjoyable then I will try to start understanding the task I am working on, such
as summarizing what I have to do in an easy understand language. I think it can
all help me in doing the learning process to meet the goals of the learning
activities that I do.
