According to Smith, D.
(2010), author of “Introduction to Journalism. Student Activities Book.” states
that the lead is vitally important to the story. No matter how well the body or
conclusion is written, if the lead does not grab the attention of the reader
and hold it, the reader will not continue to read. The reporter must entice the
reader through the lead and the best lead for a feature story is one that
sounds natural, grabs the readers’ attention, and matches the mood and tone of
the story. Several types of feature leads can be used to start writing news,
namely, allusion leads, anecdotal leads, contrast leads, parody leads,
narrative leads, descriptive lead, startling statement lead, question lead and
the last one is quotation lead. After knowing about feature leads, the body
story is also an important aspect. The body of the story needs more than a
seductive lead and punchy ending. It has to hold the reader’s attention
throughout with moments of suspense and resolution. In compiling the body of
the news several techniques can help, namely repetition of the core themes,
metaphors and figurative language, varying sentences, paragraph length, and pace,
and considering the point of view. The end of the news is Almost as important
as the feature lead is the end of the feature story. This is where the reporter
wraps it all up for the reader, ties up all the loose ends, and tries to leave
the reader with a lasting impression. We can quote with a powerful quote, or
anecdote, summarize the final paragraph, and circle back to the lead.
REFLECTION
Previously, I questioned how
to start writing good news starting from compiling feature leads that attract
readers, the body of the news to the end of the news. Because I do not yet know
about this knowledge, I will now need to read more about this topic because it is
a useful topic for me. Having learned this knowledge I now know that compiling
a lead becomes an important start of a news story. I have developed my
knowledge of this material that features leads become the basis of news that
must be made as interesting as possible so that readers are interested in
reading more news. For me, the most important aspect was where the leads must
contain 5w1h which will lead the reader to the body of the news to the end of
the news. I have developed my understanding of this knowledge regarding types
of features lead, some techniques that can help in compiling the body of the
news, and at the end of the news that can be closed with quotes, anecdotes,
summarize or restate. This knowledge is important to me in the workplace
because it can train writing skills, the ability to write according to the
structure, and how to make our writing attract readers reading
interest.
LEARNING STRATEGIES
Learning
strategies are several series of student activities for the learning process in
achieving the goals of learning activities. Each person has a different
strategy in the learning process that is done. Every time I learn something
new, I have different ways to complete a duty done. First, I will make a list
that contains which tasks or lessons that I will do. I used to write it in a
small post it and then stick it on the study table to make it easy to see.
Second, I will do it in the most comfortable place in my opinion the
comfortable room is in my bedroom more precisely on the study table. Third, I
am very happy to do the learning process accompanied by a quiet music. I have
one playlist that I always play if I am doing the learning process where I will
feel more excited in doing it. Finally, after learning has been comfortable and
enjoyable then I will try to start understanding the task I am working on, such
as summarizing what I have to do in an easy understand language. I think it can
all help me in doing the learning process to meet the goals of the learning
activities that I do.
